Android is a word that commonly describes either a robot or an operating system.  For the purpose of this article, we will discuss the latter meaning of Android.  The Android operating system was developed by Google particularly for mobile equipments or devices.  The system was transferred to Google when Google took over Android, Inc. which is the first developer of the system on August 17, 2005.  In the year 2007, the Android operating system for mobile devices became quite popular.  The system is undergoing continuous development using different tools such as the Android Development Kit.  The Android Development Kit was made to help programmers to advance the functionalities of the Android system.  Java is the program primarily used by developers in writing with the help of the Android Development Kit.  The program actually used in the Android Development Kit is a customized version of Java.

The Android Development Kit has an estimated 300,000 applications made worldwide.  In 2010, the best selling platform for smart phone was declared to be the Android Operating System.  Android is also used for other trendy and advanced mobile phones and tablet computers.  Almost all makers of cellular phones and tablet computers use Android as their operating system.

Aside from the Android Development Kit, other tools are available such as the Native Development Kit and Google App Inventor.

One useful tool that is preinstalled in Android devices pertains to the application called Market.  This application allows user to a one click browsing of the Android Market which is a online store where you can buy and download games and other applications developed by different third party programmers.  Not all Android devices have preinstalled Market application but only those which passed the compatibility requirements of Google.  Only those which passed the compatibility test are allowed to access Android Market.
